Great Philly Reads

We love our great city, so many things happened in Philadelphia that shaped the future of our country. History is everywhere you look, especially here in Old City. We are down the street from Elfreth's Alley, the oldest continually habitated street in the country, and mere blocks from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. But not all history in Philadelphia is well known. Three books we have here at Scarlett Alley are great reads for anyone in a more down and dirty look at some of our not so well known neighborhoods.

Philadelphia's Lost Waterfront
By Harry Kyriakodis An in depth look at how the ports were essential to the growth of the new city of Philadelphia. For 200 years after the city's beginning the ports remained integral for everything from international travel and business to military operations. It's a great read, and will really open your eyes to how Philadelphia was viewed by the world over 200 years ago

Northern Liberties: The story of a Philadelphia river wardBy Harry Kyriakodis
Foreward by Matt Ruben
An incredibly interesting look at the transformation of the neighborhood of Northern Liberties from 1682 to present day. Like many other areas in the country, it is in the process of transforming from a gritty manufacturing neighborhood into an artsy/hipster neighborhood brimming with boutiques and gastropubs. This fast emerging neighborhood is an exciting area for restaurants and bars, no longer will you pass by the well-worn buildings of NoLibs without a thought of the history behind them.

Fading Ads of Philadelphia
By Lawrence O'Toole
Photographer Lawrence O'Toole explores the shift in neighborhoods and industries throughout Philadelphia. It's a visual tour showing how the city has grown and businesses have changed. It's a great book to read cover to cover, or just flip through and see what you may have missed in your own neighborhood (and also read the history of what was once there).
